Double Island(s), DeCatur County, Tennessee River, Tennessee

Oct. 24; mile 149; Today’s run: 56 miles. (Total accumulated miles since leaving Nashville was 284 river miles.  Double Island is located 100 road miles from Nashville!)

En route to Double Island

We stayed inside the commercial channel by keeping the red buoys to port. But the buoy pictured above, had been moved from its original location by flood currents or a knock by a barge. It was so near to shore that it was obvious we should keep it to starboard. It’s not always obvious when buoys are out of place but usually, after a discussion, we agree which side to take them on. So far we have been right. The TVA and U.S Coast Guard do a stellar job looking after navigational needs on the Tennessee River.

Earlier this year, several barges broke loose from a towboat on the Ohio River. One struck the Louisville and Indiana Bridge pier while two others crashed into the McAlpine Dam site near Louisville Kentucky. Concrete protection surrounds this electric powerline tower to minimize damage from such an accident.

Purchasing lots with covered structures for RVs, is a popular alternative to owning cottages along this part of the Tennessee River.
The river was narrower here than any location we had seen previously on the Tennessee River. Steamboat captains referred to it as the ‘The Narrows.’
Double Island anchorage: Weekend boaters gather on this small beach to enjoy beach activities including volleyball.
The anchorages we enjoy most, are those where we can get off the boat and walk.
